Controlled Erosion Stain

Grimes & Sons Controlled Erosion Stain is a low VOC, wax and oil free, water based stain that instantly ages timber. It is designed to give a genuine, weathered appearance to raw exterior grade timber, to fade over time, and to let the natural grey of the timber take over. It can also be stained black to give a charred timber look. It will reduce tannin bleeding and water pick up after the first coat. Controlled Erosion Stain works especially well on mixed species timber, as it hides the underlying colour.

It is also suitable for use on porous Masonry, Brick, Stone, and concrete surfaces. You must do a test to determine the suitability of CES on your substrate. It can age new stone to match old, or it can unify variations or blemishes in stonework or other similar surfaces. It is also suitable for holding together mildly crumbling materials.

Coverage is ≈ 10 m²/L, depending on surface porosity and application method. Ensure surface is clean, dry, free from wax, grease, dust, etc.. In mould prone areas, we recommend treating raw timber with Chlorite to reduce the chances of mould spores coming through. Stir thoroughly before and during use with a flat paddle. Apply 2 coats with a clean brush, roller or spray gun. Controlled Erosion Stain can be scoured back to give a wonderfully deep appearance, though only on dressed timber surfaces. On Weathertex Natural, 3 coats should be applied. Not suitable for Primed Weathertex.

Gum or darker coloured timbers in particular need to be left for about 4-6 weeks, so the excess tannin and gum can leach out.

Do not apply in temperatures below 10℃ or above 30℃. Allow 24 hours drying time. Brushes and equipment should be cleaned thoroughly with water. Timber, stone, and masonry have natural faults and features, thus variation can be expected. Always make your own test on part of the job which does not show to determine suitability for your specific use.

Provide adequate ventilation, and wear eye and hand protection during use. Keep out of reach of children. Keep container closed when not in use.
